It's not always easy to define what a "Softshell" is
The softshell jacket or just “softshell” is simply essential protection for outdoor activities. Its name comes from its "softshell" technology which is an assembly of a windproof, breathable membrane, sandwiched between the water-repellent outer face and the inner face, which can be made of a more or less warm comfortable fleece.
The benefits of a softshell jacket
A softshell garment offers good thermal insulation thanks to its outer fabric and its membrane, which will protect you from the wind, as well as its lining.
Unlike a parka or waterproof jacket, the fabrics of softshell jackets are flexible, breathable and covered with a water-repellent coating which means this garment can withstand light rain.
Very functional, the softshell offers a sporty look that’s both chic and laid back.
Windproof and provides warmth
The wind makes you feel considerably colder.
With an outside temperature of 0°C and 20 km/h winds, it will feel like the temperature is -10°.
The so-called “windproof” components take away this discomfort by creating a barrier against the wind; they also reduce heat loss extremely efficiently.
The level of breathability of this jacket
The main fabric has a windproof membrane with a breathability of 3,009 g/sqm per 24 hours (according to the JIS L1099 standard, A2 method).
Fact sheet and functionality
2 hand pockets with zip fastening
Inner flap under the front zip to protect against the wind.
Protective stand-up collar.
Elasticated cuffs.
Elasticated hem.
The level of water-repellency of this jacket
The water repellent property of a fabric is its ability to make water run off its surface without absorbing it.
This prevents the fabric from swelling, and keeps it lightweight and warm.
The fabric is made water-repellent by treating (PFC-free) its outer surface, however this property may deteriorate with use.
We recommend that you restore it after each wash.
How to restore the water-repellent properties
You will find out how to reactivate the water repellency of your padded jacket in our article "Maintaining, washing and repairing waterproof or water-repellent clothing" available on the website https://www.forclaz.co.uk/how-to-look-after-and-repair-a-waterproof-jacket.
